solid water

Growing up in Florida I didn't get to experience water in its solid state in nature very often. That made a trip to a glacier all the more special two years ago. A moment in my life that truly made me speechless and almost brought me to tears. The sheer size and beauty are indescribable. New York City has given me an even great appreciation for glaciers because their handiwork is visible all over the city.
I'm glad I got to go see a montane glacier because at the rate we're going they're not going to be around forever...

Water Project #1

The next week or so I'm going to be posting pictures I showcased during my digital photography class. The photographs show water in its different forms. It is meant to show the power and beauty of the life force of our planet.

Balloon Inflation

On Thanksgiving eve every year the balloons for the Thanksgiving Day parade are inflated in the streets around the American Museum of Natural History. Two years ago I braved the crowds after work and headed down with my camera. It was VERY crowded and difficult to take many photos. The one thing I remember from it was how HUGE the balloons really are. Seeing them on TV growing up do not do justice to the sheer size of these things. Watching the parade was a tradition for my mom and I so it was a special treat to see the balloons up close and personal. I hope my parents will come to see them with me one year while we are living in the neighborhood.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Favorite Flower

Shutter speed 1/500, f/22.

If I had to chose a favorite flower I would have to choose the hibiscus. It reminds me of my childhood and the beach. Growing up we had several hibiscus bushes around the house in the back yard. There were several colors including pink. I'm not a flower person but if I HAD to pick I would simply because of the memories it brings up.

Flounder

50mm lens, shutter speed 1/90, f/2.0, no flash, iso 1600.

The flounder is definitely one of the funnier fish in the sea. They are great at camouflage though. The aquarium has a great tank that is flat with only sand in it and challenges visitors to find all 9 flounder in it. I only found 6 when I was there!

Early Morning Boardwalk

The Coney Island Boardwalk has a whole different persona in the early autumn morning. It is a tranquil place filled with runners, walkers, bikers, and people watchers. If the beach and boardwalk were always this tranquil I would definitely come and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beach like I used to in Florida. Unfortunately, during the warm months the beach and boardwalk are crawling with people. There are so many people on the beach it is hard to find the sand. The boardwalk it so crowded it is hard to walk. It is so loud you can't hear the water. This is not what I go to the beach for. I guess I can only enjoy the boardwalk in the off season.

The Autumn Cyclone

Canon EOS 10 D w/ 50 mm lens. f/5.6, 1/4000, 800 iso.

Every Saturday in November I have the pleasure of traveling to the New York Aquarium for work. Today I brought my camera along and got to capture the boardwalk in the early morning fall light. If Coney Island was this tranquil all the time I would probably consider going more. I have yet to ride the Cyclone. While I'm a huge fan of roller coasters, I loathe wooden roller coasters. They are quite jarring. One summer though, I do want to ride on a full moon. Those nights they keep it open longer. I think that would be worth the inevitable headache that hopefully would be cured by a Nathan's hot dog and beer.

Sam Friend

Shot with my Canon EOS 10D at f1.8 with a shutter speed of 1/45 & iso 800. Editing done in iphoto (yes, I'm being lazy about the editing!)

I always try to take my camera when we go see our friends play around the city. I enjoy watching them play and practicing taking pictures in low light situations. The situations always test me and sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised by the results. If you want me to come to a show and take pictures let me know! I love the practice!
